PRESS A AND B FIERCELY. Or, let's talk about Pokemon Black and White 2...!

The fusion dance went horribly(?) wrong.
Ho-hum.

It's that time of the year when Nintendo is being slow and boring about their releases. I mean, sure... you've got Mario Tennis Open just announced, and Kid Icarus: Uprising on the horizon (expect a few articles on Sakurai during March), but Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion 2, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and Kingdom Hearts 3D haven't had release dates for North America yet, and those are some key titles. How is Nintendo going to keep sales and interest high? I just don't understand how they could possibly...

Wait.

A new Pokemon title...?

Let me get my hat so I can turn it backwards, because it's FUCKING ON.

So as any good Nintendo fanboy would boast, I am a huge Pokemon fan. As a matter of fact, I would go as far as to say I'm a MASSIVE Pokemon fan. Fun fact, all you haters, Pokemon doesn't come up as a misspelled word on my blog's spell-check. The internet has acknowledged it's awesomeness. Anywho, just yesterday (look at me, being all up-to-date) Pokemon Black and White Version 2 were announced, along with these prophetic images of the title Legendary Pokemon Zekrom and Reshiram fused with the mysterious third member of their trio, Kyurem. I mean, at least, that's what it looks like. It could totally NOT be Reshiram and Zekrom, considering both Pokemon appear to have more Kyurem-centric features on their faces. Then again, their bodies are clearly based on Zekrom and Reshiram, so whether this means Kyurem fuses with either of these Pokemon or merely takes on their qualities is kind of unknown. However, the title Legendary Pokemon are being called Kyurem White and Kyurem Black, which means these will be alternate formes of Kyurem, not Zekrom and Reshiram, I guess... I mean, it's been a day since this thing was announced, people.

BUT, more importantly, this is the first time two games, not one, have been released headlining a third Legendary. We can speculate all we want on why this is, and I have a few theories myself, but until the games have more information released or actually are released themselves, we won't really know. But we can assume some things already- alternate forme Pokemon are going to be introduced, the plot of the original Black and White versions will be addressed, locales will be modified, and game mechanics will be returning with more frequency. Let me explain.

1) Alternate Forme Pokemon are a new mechanic that Game Freak has been experimenting with as of late- well, ever since the third Generation, actually. Pokemon changing appearance and learning new abilities, getting different and better stats, and learning new moves by the use of hold items, moves, and in-game objects are becoming more and more of a frequent thing, and though it doesn't really boost the number of Pokemon, it gives players more options. Clearly these two title Pokemon are going to be alternate forms of either Kyurem, but that's probably not all we're going to see. Shaymin is another Pokemon from the fourth Generation that had an alternate forme, and Black and White have increased the amount of alternate Forme Pokemon heavily. I have no doubt we'll see additional formes making an appearance on other Legendary Pokemon, or even more common Pokemon, as well.

2) Being the first two titles with a "2" in them, this is not merely a game that will brush the events of the first Black and White games under the carpet. With the increased interest by Game Freak to actually have a story in their games instead of just "Catchin' 'Em All", and these games being true sequels to Black and White, we can expect a whole new adventure. But what does that mean for the Unova region? Another important thing to note is that Kyurem Black appears on the cover of Black 2 and Kyurem White appears in White 2, which means these forms may have something to do with the Legendary used by N at the end of Black and White.

3) With Platinum Version, we saw some slight changes to locales, with snow appearing a whole lot, and the inclusion of a whole new "dungeon" in the form of Giratina's Distortion World. There will probably be some stark differences going on in Black and White 2, though, seeing as slight changes between the original Black and White have already made an appearance. We'll probably see a new dungeon, but it wouldn't surprise me if Game Freak heavily altered how the protagonist will have to travel through Unova, seeing as this game could be an attempt to break the mold of the "third game" idea of simply having a third Legendary make an appearance.

4) Lastly, triple battles were an interesting occurrence in Black and White, but there were very few of them, as they were such a new concept. If this game wants to improve upon its successor, we'll most likely see more triple battles showing up. Hopefully more areas will have wild double battles that aren't so easily avoidable, either.

I mean, this is certainly an interesting development. Maybe Game Freak is going for some sort of continuity within the Pokemon universe, and maybe they're trying to make Pokemon games into something much less formulaic than they have been previously... but that may or may not be a good thing. In any case, there will be more articles on the subject as we get more information.
